Women Petition Government To Implement Istanbul Convention Promises Made 2012

On the 8th June 2012 the UK Government promised to get serious about ending violence against women.

They promised a new law - the 'IC' - the Istanbul Convention (IC) on Violence Against Women that would dramatically change the lives of all women in the UK.

That promise as with so many made by the Tory Government has not come to fruition. They have now had some nine years to implement their commitment to tackle seriously the level of violence against women in the UK, and the misery and deaths it brings to victims and their family and friends.

Every week an average of 2 women are killed by a partner or ex-partner in the UK. In England and Wales at least 233 women are raped every day and 31% have experienced domestic abuse since the age of 16.

Support services are overwhelmed and underfunded. 112 women and their 84 children were turned away from refuge on just one day this year.

Campaigners say that the Tory Government promised through new legislation to:

  • Prevent violence against women
  • Protect women who are experiencing violence
  • Prosecute perpetrators of violence

They are demanding the UK Government keeps this promise through introducing the Istanbul Convention (IC) on Violence Against Women into UK law.

It is about making changes that have impact. It will make violence against women and domestic violence the priorities they should be. Some of the many groundbreaking changes in the IC law are:

  • Preventing further cuts to domestic violence refuges and specialist support services
  • Providing sufficient shelters and sexual violence referral centres, psychological support, a free 24/7 helpline and legal aid
  • Providing education on topics such as domestic violence, personal integrity and healthy relationships
  • Criminalising issues such as FGM, forced marriage and psychological abuse
  • Ensuring all women have access to support– regardless of race, religion, disability or any other identity

 The IC offers much more.
